Statement:

Drawing and painting have been Michelle’s favorite activities for as long as she can remember. Her work is rooted in plein air painting: she finds no substitute for the rich experience of observing the natural world. More paintings, drawings, prints, and collages subsequently take shape in the studio. Some are recognizable as landscapes while others are more abstracted, but they share the same source. She is inspired by coastal rocks and loves thinking about the process of their formation via water and wind. For her, the tactile process of artmaking itself feels like a metaphor for geological phenomena.

Michelle received her MFA from Massachusetts College of Art in 2009. She previously received a post-baccalaureate certificate in painting from Brandeis University in 2007 and a BA in history from Vassar College in 2002. She has been awarded residencies at the Rocky Neck Artists’ Colony in Gloucester, MA and at the Vermont Studio Center in Johnson, VT.
