This body of work is entitled, "Open Now Hidden Road." The work consists of sculptural reliefs made from cast-off materials (Styrofoam, cardboard, plastic, packaging). The reliefs are predominantly white in order to permit light to enter the space. Beneath the white a single, vivid color is present reflecting off the whiteness. This reflected hue emerges from corners and crevices giving the viewer glimpses of color. These covert colors reappear in related reliefs shrouded in a single hue. The reliefs inspired charcoal drawings which consist of unrelenting layers of line that are deconstructed with a chamois cloth and then built up again. The resulting pieces are energetic fields of darkness and light.
When I began this body of work my intention was to conduct a structural exploration evoking the idea of secrecy. I was thinking a great deal about what we as individuals choose to disclose and to conceal from others in our daily lives. Consequently my work began as tightly constructed, closed spaces; however, it soon evolved into very open constructions of form and space. I contemplated the concept of secrets: Secrets are in actuality - hidden truths. The new structures did not exude secretiveness. Instead, they depict emerging truth.
