Cara Foster Karim is an artist working primarily in mixed media. Cara studied studio art, focusing on oil painting and sculpture at Dartmouth College but then worked for almost 10 years in affordable housing and urban planning before returning to art full time. Due to her professional background she approach her work primed to notice the urban built environment of Somerville and surrounding towns and the people who are a part of it. Cara creates collages using newspapers collected from local businesses, trail maps, and other paper found materials. Using materials that reference local places and communities reinforces a sense of groundedness, connection, and meaning. Cara hopes her work helps the viewer take a second look at everyday scenes and notice their beauty and complexity.
